Adding weight every session is a beginner phase, not a law. When the jumps stop landing, add reps or sets first and take the weight later. The projection is arithmetic, not a promise.

Example: a 60 kg barbell lift moves to 62.5 kg next session, one 2.5 kg plate step at a time.

How this is worked out

The increment is decided by the equipment, not by ambition. A barbell's smallest useful jump is two 1.25 kg plates, commercial dumbbells come in 2 kg steps, and a machine stack pins at 5 kg. You cannot add 1 kg to a machine no matter how much you would like to.

Those steps line up with what the strength training literature recommends anyway: roughly 1 to 2.5 kg on upper body lifts and 2.5 to 5 kg on lower body ones, per successful session, while linear progression is still working.

The projection assumes every session lands, which is exactly what makes it useful and exactly what makes it wrong. Nobody adds 2.5 kg twenty sessions in a row. The table is showing you a rate so you can see how quickly it becomes absurd, which is the honest way to present linear progression.

What progressive overload actually means

It means the demand on the muscle goes up over time. That is the whole principle, and everything else is implementation detail.

Weight is the obvious lever and the one people fixate on, but it is one of several. More reps at the same weight is overload. More sets is overload. The same work with shorter rest is overload. Better technique through a fuller range of motion is overload, and it is the one most beginners are actually getting when the bar weight jumps.

The reason weight gets the attention is that it is easy to measure and hard to fake. But a lifter adding a rep a week to a fixed load is progressing just as surely as one adding 2.5 kg, and will keep progressing long after the weight jumps have stopped.

How much to add, by equipment

The smallest useful jump for each piece of kit, and what it compounds to across ten sessions.

Dumbbells are the awkward one. A 2 kg jump on a dumbbell press is 4 kg across the pair, which on a 16 kg dumbbell is a 12 percent increase in one session. That is why dumbbell progress often looks like a stall followed by a leap: there is nothing between the rungs. Adding reps until the top of your range before taking the jump is the way through it.

Twenty sessions is roughly ten weeks at twice a week. If you could actually add 2.5 kg every one of them, a 100 kg squat would be a 147.5 kg squat by spring. Nobody does this past their first year, and reading the right hand column is the fastest way to understand why linear progression has to end.

The deload in the ladder

The same progression with a deload every fifth cycle. The light week is a step out of the ladder rather than down it: the session after it resumes where the progression left off, not where the deload was.

That detail matters more than it sounds. A deload that resets your working weight turns a planned easy week into two weeks of lost progress, and it is the single most common reason people refuse to take one.

When the weight stops moving

Add a rep before you add a kilo. If you are prescribed 3 sets of 8 and you got 8, 8, 7 last time, the next session is not heavier, it is 8, 8, 8. Take the weight when all the reps land comfortably.

After that: add a set, tighten the rest periods, or improve the movement itself. And when several of those have run out at once, it is usually not a plateau, it is accumulated fatigue, and the answer is a lighter week rather than a harder one.

What is a Progressive Overload?

Progressive overload is the principle that a muscle must face gradually increasing demand to keep adapting. That demand can rise through heavier weight, more reps, more sets, shorter rest or improved range of motion. Without it, training maintains what you have rather than building on it.

Because progressive overload accumulates fatigue alongside strength, every fourth to sixth hard block ends in a deload week, with deload weights worked out per lift at roughly 65 percent of max and half the usual sets.

How much weight should I add each week?

As little as the equipment allows, and only when the current weight is being handled cleanly. On a barbell that is 2.5 kg, on dumbbells 2 kg, on a machine 5 kg. Beginners can often add that every session on lower body lifts; after the first year, adding it every few weeks is normal and still fast progress.

What if I cannot add weight anymore?

Add a rep instead. If you are on 3 sets of 8 and getting 8, 8, 7, the next step is getting all three sets to 8, not adding load. When the reps top out, add a set or tighten the rest. If several of those stall at the same time, take a deload week before assuming you have plateaued.

How fast should I be progressing?

Beginners often add weight every session for a few months. After that it slows to weekly, then monthly, and eventually to a few kilos a year on your main lifts. That deceleration is normal and universal, not a sign anything is wrong. Judging your fifth year against your first is the fastest way to quit.

Is progressive overload only about adding weight?

No, and treating it that way is why people stall. More reps at the same load, more sets, shorter rest, better range of motion and better control are all increases in demand. A lifter who adds one rep a week to a fixed weight is progressing, and will keep progressing long after the plate jumps stop.

Should I add weight if my form is breaking down?

No. If the last reps are only moving because the range of motion shortened or something else took over, the weight is already too heavy and adding to it trains the compensation rather than the muscle. Hold the load until the reps are clean, which is itself progressive overload.
