How much volume a muscle should get in a week, what your split adds up to, and whether the two agree.
Sets means hard working sets, not warmups. The range is per muscle, so an exercise that hits two muscles counts toward both.
Example: an intermediate lifter lands at 12 to 16 hard sets per muscle per week.
Volume here means hard working sets per muscle per week. Not warmups, not total reps, not tonnage. Counting sets is crude, but it is the measure the research uses and the one that predicts growth well enough to program against.
The weekly ranges come from the dose response work on training volume, which finds more sets producing more growth up to a point and then flattening. Ten to twenty sets a week per muscle is where most trained lifters live. The bands here narrow that by training age, because a beginner grows on less and an advanced lifter can recover from more.
The second half is the split. A weekly total is a target, but you reach it through sessions, and each split distributes it differently: one muscle a day does a week's work in one go, a full body split spreads the same work across three. For most trained lifters, ten to twenty hard sets per muscle per week. Under about ten and you are maintaining rather than building. Past twenty the returns get small and the recovery cost does not.
The important word is hard. A set taken to two or three reps from failure counts. A set you stopped at because the timer went off does not, however heavy it was. Most people who think they are doing twenty sets a week are doing perhaps twelve that are actually driving anything.
Beginners are the exception in the useful direction: they grow on notably less, and the extra volume mostly buys soreness. Eight to ten sets a week per muscle is a full program at that stage, which is why a beginner on a well run two day full body split often outpaces one grinding six days a week.

Notice the days per week column climbs more slowly than the volume does. Advanced lifters are not mostly training more often, they are doing more inside each session and recovering from it. Frequency is a way to distribute volume, not a substitute for it.

Sets means hard working sets per muscle per week. The band widens as you advance because work capacity does, and because a lifter three years in can recover from volume that would flatten them in month two.
The same weekly total reached four different ways. Read the last column against the band for your experience: if they do not overlap, the split is the problem, not your effort.
The one muscle a day split is the interesting case. It concentrates ten to sixteen sets for a muscle into a single session, which is a lot of work in one sitting and the hardest version to recover from. It is also the only one here that trains each muscle once a week, and once a week is at the low end of what the frequency research supports.

What each split adds up to in one rotation through it. They aim at similar weekly totals from different directions: a one muscle a day split does its whole week in one session, a full body split spreads the same work across three. Match the weekly total to the band for your experience, then pick whichever schedule you will actually keep. Past advanced, the numbers stop lining up, and that is the honest answer rather than a gap in the table: a lifter needing 25 sets a week is running the rotation more than once, which is what training five to seven days a week actually buys.
Volume has a time cost and most programs ignore it. This is the estimate, including a warmup and assuming half the exercises are compounds.
Rest is what drives it. A strength session and a hypertrophy session with the same number of sets differ by half an hour, purely because four minutes between sets adds up. If your sessions are running long, the rest periods are usually the reason, not the exercise count.

Past the top of your range, added sets buy fatigue rather than growth. The muscle is not receiving more signal, it is receiving more damage to repair, and the repair is what the next session was supposed to be for.
The symptoms are recognisable: sessions get longer while performance stops moving, soreness lasts into the next session, and the weights stall at a load you were handling comfortably a month ago. If that is happening, the answer is usually fewer sets taken harder, not more sets.
Knowing you want fourteen sets for chest is the easy part. Distributing that across sessions, keeping each muscle inside its recovery window, and not letting the accessories quietly double the real total is the work.

Training volume is how much work a muscle receives, usually counted as hard working sets per muscle per week. It is the main variable driving muscle growth once effort and technique are adequate, and it is the number most training programs are implicitly built around whether or not they say so.
Most trained lifters grow on ten to twenty hard sets per muscle per week, and a workout planner only delivers that volume when it schedules sessions around which muscles have recovered.
Ten to twenty hard working sets a week covers most trained lifters. Beginners do well on eight to ten and gain nothing from more. Advanced lifters can use twenty or more, but only alongside the recovery capacity that comes with years of training. Sets that were not taken close to a challenging effort do not really count toward this.
Not inherently. It sits at the top of the productive range for an intermediate to advanced lifter and it is where a lot of good programs live. It becomes too much when it stops being recoverable, which shows up as stalled weights, lingering soreness and sessions that keep getting longer while nothing improves.
No. Volume counts hard working sets, the ones taken close enough to failure to be a genuine stimulus. Warmups exist to prepare the movement and they should not be taxing enough to add to the weekly total. Counting them is the most common way people overestimate what they are doing.
Twice, usually, if the weekly total is the same. Splitting fourteen sets into two sessions of seven means each session is done at a higher quality than one session of fourteen, where the last few sets are performed tired. The weekly total matters more than the frequency, but the frequency helps you hit the total well.
Count them toward both, usually at full value for the primary muscle and roughly half for the secondary one. A barbell row is back volume and about half of it is biceps volume. This is why people who add heavy direct arm work on top of a full pulling day often end up well past their intended arm total.
